SYHA’s Glasgow Metro youth hostel awarded 3 stars by VisitScotland

SYHA Hostelling Scotland’s (SYHA) Glasgow Metro Youth Hostel, one of three temporary summer city youth hostels, has been awarded 3 stars in VisitScotland’s Quality Assurance scheme.

2016 is the second year that SYHA has taken over the running of The Glasgow School of Art’s (GSA) Margaret Macdonald House – student residence accommodation – at Cowcaddens over the busy summer tourist season, as part of its strategy to identify new sites to modernise its popular youth tourism destinations to meet guests’ expectations.

VisitScotland’s internationally recognised grading scheme brings together all the accommodation, attractions and places to eat that come with the VisitScotland seal of approval – a clear, reliable sign of exceptional customer service and high-quality facilities. The 3 star rating, awarded to SYHA, represents a grading score of between 60 and 74% and has been increased from the 2 star 2015 award due to upgraded decoration and floor coverings by GSA and improvements in general cleanliness ahead of SYHA’s summer residency.

SYHA will run The Glasgow School of Art’s student accommodation until 31 August 2016, providing the budget traveller visiting this top city destination with additional city centre bedspaces.   All 110 bedrooms at Glasgow Metro are single and almost 50% of the rooms are ensuite. They all have access to a kitchen equipped for basic self-catering. Prices start from £25pppn, with free wifi included.

Turning the student residence accommodation into a youth hostel over the summer months proved popular in 2015 with individuals, families, students and groups. The central location is in easy reach of Glasgow’s tourist attractions, cultural and music festivals and events, architecture, sports venues, shopping, restaurants and bars; as well as for onward travel to destinations throughout Scotland.

SYHA Hostelling Scotland’s Chief Executive, Keith Legge, said:

“We are extremely happy to have been awarded a 3 star grading in our second year of running Glasgow Metro over the busy summer months and working in close partnership with The Glasgow School of Art to improve the facilities for our guests.   Turning the student residence accommodation into a quality youth hostel and in such a central location is popular with individuals, families, students and groups.”

Guests looking to stay in the West End also have the option of SYHA’s existing Glasgow Youth Hostel at the top of Kelvingrove Park, which is open all year round.
